Welcome to the home page of Richard Dunn.
Here you will find photos of many of the birds that I have seen on my travels as well as the common birds of the UK, mostly from Northumberland, my home patch.
I'm also building up a collection of images of Mammals, Butterflies and Dragonflies.

I am always adding new images to the site, meanwhile I hope you enjoy the current content

Japan February 2009

"I would love to go to Japan, the birding would be superb", I once said that, but never dreamed that I would get there. And then a chance remark from my friend Graeme, that "Ian Fisher was planning a trip to Japan" had me typing an email and sending it to Ian. When are you going? Was there space? Can I come?

And now I've been, it was fantastic! Bird of the trip was the absolutely stunning Steller's Sea Eagle, what a fantastic spectacle it was to watch these massive birds squabble over scraps of fish. If I hadn't seen the eagle then Japanese Waxwing would have been my bird of the trip, we thought we had missed these by not seeing them at a regular area, only to find two by chance in a town feeding on berries in the snow...

At last the pictures are starting to flow, not be long now

Glaucous-winged Gull Today was the first day that I was able to get to the land of the Smog Monsters since the news of this mega broke, being at work on Saturday when millions saw it and Sunday when no-one saw it. I had just arrived at Saltholme when a kind chappie came by and said it was showing on Dormans Pool, it was but not well until it flew past..

Buff-breasted Sandpiper The water drops at Cresswell due to a storm, for the first time in two years and all of a sudden there are waders to be seen, And in with them is an excellent Buff-breasted Sandpiper, unable to go on its first day, I'm up there at first light and although the bird takes a while to show, it does allow me to get close enough for a few shots.

Red-flanked Bluetail While at work on Friday news of a Red-flanked Bluetail on Holy Island was depressing as I could not get on Friday or Saturday, and then it was not seen on Saturday. So when it was re-found (by the finder) while I was watching the Desert Wheatear, Holy Island was my next port of call. Two days later its showing really well.

DotterelA phone call while stuck in traffic becasue, all the local roads were flooded alerted me to a Dotterel at the very pace I was going to. Eventually I arrived on site and saw the bird very well but I had no camera gear as the rain had been so hard and didn't want to take the risk of it getting soaked, so the bird had to wait till the following day for me to take its picture. It was well worth the wait.

Desert Wheatear A male Desert Wheatear dragged me from the house and up to the Alcan power station just North of Newbiggin. Horrible place but an excellent bird, although it did not come as close to me as it did for others, pictures were taken. Another visit a day later and the bird was coming to see who wanted to take its picture

Storm Petrel I had only been once to a Storm Petrel ringing session and that was because of a phone call in the middle of the night from the old now defunct grapevine, in July 1994 to go and see the regular, at the time, Swinhoe's Petrel. So a chance to have another go and I was there. Far from perfect conditions but one was caught and probably a couple more seen.
